Common Foot Conditions

Bunions

Bunions are an enlargement at the side of the foot, at the big toe joint, which can be painful.

Bunions are hereditary and quite often they are exasperated by footwear. Bunions often form because of a mechanical imbalance called overpronation which is a biomechanical condition when your arches collapse and roll in when walking. This imbalance puts more pressure on the big toe joint resulting in a misalignment of the joint.

Ingrown Toenails

Ingrown toenails occur when the edge of a toenail digs into the skin. If the skin is penetrated it can lead to infection. With repeated infection, the skin may grow over the toenail, resulting in a large, swollen, tender mass.

Treatment for ingrown toenails ranges from conservative foot soaks, gently cutting back the corner of the affected nail with a very small nipper, or minor surgery. We may also prescribe antibiotics if the area is infected.
